Social media data for beginners

Harvest and analyse Twitter data using TAGS and Tableau.

Objective

This tutorial looks at how to extract data from Twitter with tools without the need for programming experience. The first stage uses TAGS to create a dataset of tweets. The second stage explores the new dataset with Tableau.

The tutorial is aimed towards graduate students and researchers interested in using social media data in their research but who are not yet experienced with coding or working with data.


TAGS

TAGS is an nice entry-level tool to extract and develop an archive of Twitter data. All you need to get up and running is a Google and Twitter account.

Tableau

We then use Tableau to carry out our data analysis. Tableau is a powerful data visualisation tool with a drag-and-drop interface that is easy to use. It’s a useful tool to learn to help communicate your research and findings, and present your data to wider audiences.
